Ok so here's the story
My mom graduated from high school in 1955 and got a class ring. She got married the fall after she graduated. My dad wore her class ring while they were engaged and after they got married on his pinky finger but he was working in grain elevators alot and always wore gloves and wore down her initals that were embossed on the top of the ring.
Anyway when I was in 8th grade I started wearing my mom's class ring (I am such a sucker for history and nostalgia I wouldn't even buy a class ring of my own because I liked my mom's better) I wore it through jr high, high school, college and even for quite a few years after Jeff and I were married.
This summer I gave it to Lizzie to wear (I was waiting for her to be responsible enough to not loose it) and she loves it (nostalgia thing again). So here is the dilema Lizzie and I would like to get it engraved on the inside with my mom's initials and graduating year 1955, then my initials and 1987 then Lizzies initals and 2010 (cool that she graduates 55 years after her grandma who graduated in 1955). I have called Josten's (where my mom got the ring from in the first place) and they can do the engraving and refinish the antiquing and all of that. The downside is that the ring being worn so much and with being 55 years old the bottom of the ring is wearing down and not as thick as it use to be.
So Josten can do 2 things they can clean the ring up, do the engraving or they can complete recreate the ring then Lizzie would have a brand new ring and maybe it can last for another 3 generations, or I can have Josten's do what they can for free then take it to a jewler to add to the thickness.
I am so torn, I think I am pretty set against having Josten create a new ring I would love to see mom's ring with the embossing on it but the story is too sweet of her fiancee' and new husband wearing it under his work gloves (it shows a side to my dad the is too cute).
So people give me your input because I am not sure were to go from here. Does anyone know will jewlers add to the thickness on a ring so it will last longer?
Thank you for reading my ramblings and any input would be greatly appreciated. (I will try to remember to get a picture of the ring and post it)
